"The newly unearthed diaries of a colourful assassin for the wartime Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA, reveal that American spy chiefs wanted Patton dead because he was threatening to expose allied collusion with the Russians that cost American lives.

The death of General Patton in December 1945, is one of the enduring mysteries of the war era. Although he had suffered serious injuries in a car crash in Manheim, he was thought to be recovering and was on the verge of flying home.

But after a decade-long investigation, military historian Robert Wilcox claims that OSS head General "Wild Bill" Donovan ordered a highly decorated marksman called Douglas Bazata to silence Patton, who gloried in the nickname "Old Blood and Guts".

His book, "Target Patton", contains interviews with Mr Bazata, who died in 1999, and extracts from his diaries, detailing how he staged the car crash by getting a troop truck to plough into Patton's Cadillac and then shot the general with a low-velocity projectile, which broke his neck while his fellow passengers escaped without a scratch.

Mr Bazata also suggested that when Patton began to recover from his injuries, US officials turned a blind eye as agents of the NKVD, the forerunner of the KGB, poisoned the general.

Mr Wilcox told The Sunday Telegraph that when he spoke to Mr Bazata: "He was struggling with himself, all these killings he had done. He confessed to me that he had caused the accident, that he was ordered to do so by Wild Bill Donovan.

"Donovan told him: 'We've got a terrible situation with this great patriot, he's out of control and we must save him from himself and from ruining everything the allies have done.' I believe Douglas Bazata. He's a sterling guy."

UPDATE: Tubbs-Jones finally passed on late in the afternoon.

It sounds like another Clinton superdelegate has been targeted for assassination, this time by a directed-energy weapon, likely in the microwave frequency range, inducing a brain aneurysm in the vidtim.

FoxNews/AP said it went down like this:

"[...] An officer was driving behind Tubbs Jones' car at about 9 p.m.ET and observed her weaving.

After a couple of turns, the officer turned on his lights to stop the congresswoman. When she pulled to the side, her car then started to roll across the lanes of oncoming traffic. The officer then pulled his cruiser in front of her car to block it from oncoming traffic, the report said.

When the officer walked up to her sedan, he noticed she was in "medical distress" and called for an ambulance.

Tubbs Jones was one of Hillary Clinton's biggest supporters during the Democratic primary.

Plenty of people were awfully anxious to call this Clinton supporter dead. From RawStory.com :

"Around 1 p.m. Wednesday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer ran an anonymously sourced report that Tubbs Jones had died after being removed from life support.

A Democratic official in Washington also told reporters that Tubbs Jones died, resulting in this Associated Press NewsAlert. It was unclear where the Democratic official got his or her information, but AP killed the alert of her death when a doctor said she was in critical condition.

That post apparently became the basis for subsequent reports of her death.

Clinton superdelegate U.S. Sen Dianne Feinstein, has chickened out of attending the DNC convention, claiming a broken ankle. Better than having a stroke on the highway?

Hot off the wire:

"IS THE DEATH OF THE ARKANSAS DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIRMAN PART OF AN OBAMA BODY COUNT?

Washington DC, Aug. 13 -- This afternoon, Arkansas Democratic Party Chairman Bill Gwatney fell victim to what was evidently a political assassination. Gwatney was a major ally of Hillary and Bill Clinton, and was a leader of the strongly pro-Clinton Arkansas delegation to the upcoming Denver Democratic National Convention.

Gwatney's Arkansas delegation was known to be a hotbed of anti-Obama sentiment, and was reportedly ready to walk out of the Denver convention if Senator Clinton were not to be treated fairly by the Howard Dean-Donna Brazile DNC leadership.

Observers in Washington are now asking whether the assassination of Gwatney can be read as attempted intimidation of the anti-Obama forces which are now gaining strength before the Denver convention.

Is the death of Bill Gwatney part of an Obama body count, which already includes the names of Donald Young (the murdered gay choirmaster of Rev. Wright's church) and possibly others?

The statements releaed by the Clinton and Obama camps are telling. The Clintons call him a confidante and then Obama... [LINK]:

“We are stunned and shaken by today’s shooting at the Arkansas Democratic Party where our good friend and fellow Democrat Bill Gwatney was critically wounded. Bill is not only a strong chairman of Arkansas’ Democratic Party, but he is also a cherished friend and confidante. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill and his family today and we wish him a quick recovery."

Obama released the following:

“...We’re all grateful for the quick action of law enforcement and quick thinking by Chairman Gwatney’s staff, and Michelle and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers.”

... it sounds like Obama thanked law enforcement for killing the alleged assassin dead before he could talk -- and also took a subtle shot at the "quick thinking" of the local yokels who stood by and watched their leader get executed. Ominous indeed.

"Determining the cause of death of the U.S. Air Force's second-highest-ranking weapons buyer may take several weeks, the medical examiner's office said on Tuesday.

Charles Riechers, 47, was found dead at his Chantilly, Virginia, home on Sunday in an apparent suicide, an internal Air Force memorandum said.

[...]Riechers had been facing scrutiny after The Washington Post reported the Air Force arranged to have him paid about $13,400 a month by a contractor, Commonwealth Research Institute, while he awaited final clearance as the principal deputy assistant secretary for acquisition.

Riechers' ties to Commonwealth Research, registered as a nonprofit in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, sparked new questions last week about a disputed $1.2 billion contract awarded to Boeing Co for depot maintenance of the KC-135 refueling tanker fleet.

Pemco Aviation Group on Friday amended its protest to the Government Accountability Office over the contract, which fell under Riechers' purview. It raised questions about a possible conflict of interest because of purported ties among Commonwealth, its corporate parent, Concurrent Technologies Corp., and Boeing.

A Boeing spokesman in St. Louis, Forrest Gossett, said a company called Concurrent Technologies Corp "has done work with Boeing in the past."[...]

The Air Force had no immediate comment on any conflict-of-interest reviews it might have launched in the matter. A Pemco spokeswoman, Doris Sewell, declined to comment.

A Concurrent Technologies spokeswoman did not immediately respond to an inquiry about any work with Boeing, the Pentagon's second-largest contractor after Lockheed Martin Corp.

Riechers had been involved with top acquisition programs, including a $40 billion competition between Boeing, on the one hand, and a Northrop Grumman Corp-EADS team on the other, for an aerial refueling tanker fleet. That contract is due to be awarded late this year or early in 2008.

"He'd flown helicopters during the Vietnam War, and later in New York City for WABC-TV, as a news pilot, brought viewers close to countless horrific events: the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Staten Island ferry crash and the recent steam pipe explosion in Manhattan.

But on Sunday evening it was doing something comparatively safe - standing on a midtown sidewalk - that put Paul Smith in harm's way. Police say Smith, 60, of West Islip, and his wife Donna, 55, had just left a restaurant when a taxicab jumped the curb and ran over him.

Smith was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Yesterday, his wife remained there in stable condition with a fractured leg. A 7-year-old boy had his arm broken in the crash, police said. It was not clear whether he was related to Smith.

No charges have been filed against the driver, who tested negative for alcohol.

Police were reviewing security cameras and investigating the accident, which took place at Third Avenue and East 40th Street. They said the cabbie said he was swerving to avoid another car.

The driver, Mohammed Chowdury, told reporters last night he was forced off the road by a black car that cut him off. He had been driving a cab just five weeks, he said.

Interesting claims by the transient driver of this death-car, no?

A June interview of the reporter with Smith in the official WABC chopper on 9/11 indicated that Smith's chopper flew away from the scene before the South Tower event ... so whose WESCAM helicopter camera system produced this shot? Who didn't want Smith to say what he knew?
