Libertarians, Barr back right of return for Ike refugees

From the Liberatrian Party Sep 18, 2008:
    "
"There is something inherently wrong with the government forcibly keeping people away from their homes and property," says Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party's nominee for president, in response to the government's continuing and heavy-handed attempt to bar Hurricane Ike evacuees from returning to their homes in Texas.

"There is, of course, an obvious risk to returning to a disaster area," says Barr. "However, government should not forcibly prevent evacuees from returning to their own houses and property. It is their choice, for better or for worse, to return to their homes."

Galveston officials initially allowed residents to return, but soon after rescinded the policy for fear of traffic backups and other problems. In some parts of Texas, martial law is being considered to forcibly expel hundreds of residents who refuse to leave their homes.

"It is absurd to keep people from their property when they willingly return or have remained," Barr observes. "Instead, the government makes them refugees, reliant on the inefficient and expensive 'charity' of government."

"During hurricane Katrina, the government said, 'Trust us,' and look what happened. Now, the government is saying the same thing again," notes Barr. "Yet, many of these people would be better off on their own instead of in the hands of FEMA or some other government agency."

"Government has no right to keep people from their property," Barr insists. "Let the people go home."

McCain, Obama inelgible for Texas ballot, but...

A message from the Bob Barr 2008 campaign Sept. 5:
"[...] Last night, I received a response from the Texas Secretary of State's office to my request for the certification papers submitted by the Texas Republicans and Democrats that would place Barack Obama, John McCain and their running mates on the ballot.

Their certification papers were due to the state on August 26th at 5 pm.

The law is explicit on the matter. The names of the candidates for president and vice president are due by the deadline.

After reviewing the documents, it is clear that both the Republican and Democrat presidential tickets missed the deadlines and, according to Texas state law, should not be on the ballot in Texas.

If you want to see for yourself and download the documents, click here.

Regardless of McCain and Obama's failure to meet the statutory deadline, the Texas Secretary of State seems poised to certify the ballot with their names on it. They've even updated their official candidate listing to include McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden after we first made this public (and John McCain announced Palin as his running mate).

While Republicans and Democrats look to easily slide by in Texas regardless of the law, in both West Virginia and Maine, we are facing an opposite set of circumstances.
    [...]
It's been clear that if you are running for office as a Republican or a Democrat, you are somehow above the law.

If you are a Libertarian or independent, you not only have to abide by the letter of the law but you have to be prepared when the law is twisted and turned to be used against you.

[...] Last night, our campaign manager, Russell Verney, submitted a very clear letter to the Texas Secretary of State.

    In the letter, Russ stated:
The Democratic Party, and Mr. Obama and the Republican Party and Mr. McCain blatantly ignored the Texas statutory deadline.

Therefore, the Libertarian candidate for president, Bob Barr, as represented by his principal campaign committee, Bob Barr 2008, demands that your office keep the names of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, John McCain and Sarah Palin off the Texas general election ballot.

Failure of the Secretary of State to comply with Texas law will result in serious legal consequences.
In the event that the Secretary of State's office in Texas does not comply with its own law, we are prepared to file suit, however this battle will just be the beginning.

On top of the additional and large legal expenses that we are likely to incur, we are going to have to divert campaign resources to deal with the media that is just starting to carry this story . . . but not in a positive manner.

Here's the New York Times this morning painting Bob Barr as a troublemaker, interfering with the election and even the economy:
What would happen if Mr. Barr prevailed? It is very hard to see how Senator McCain could get 270 electoral votes without getting the 34 from Texas. Could we end up with a messier election than we had in 2000?

Would the Supreme Court again get to pick the man who will pick the court's members? Would all this thoroughly alarm foreign investors, whose sales could damage stock and bond prices while the fight was on?

No, it won't happen. At least we can hope it won't.

Bilderbergers bash Barr

The 2008 list of Bilderberg participants lists the following:
    Rapporteurs
GBR "Bredow, Vendeline von" "Business Correspondent, The Economist"
GBR "Wooldridge, Adrian D." "Foreign Correspondent, The Economist"
The Economist has been a pet Bilderberg publication for decades, and has reasserted its place as the preeminent Bilderberg propagandist with several invites in recent years. So it wasn't a big surprise to find the Bilderberg house organ launch a salvo at the pro-freedom party and candidate who dare challenge their anointed savior Obama and old standby John McCain. From The Economist May 29th 2008:
"ON MAY 25th a dysfunctional minor party picked a grumpy ex-Republican as its presidential candidate. This may be just another quirk in the quirky history of the Libertarian Party.. .

The new Libertarian champion, Bob Barr, a former four-term Georgia congressman, is most famous for his poor judgment and sour temper. He led the fight to defang anti-terrorism legislation after the Oklahoma City bombing (among his achievements: preventing the government from designating foreign groups as terrorists and denying their members visas to enter the country). He championed social-conservative causes such as the Defence of Marriage Act, which he drafted, and the impeachment of Bill Clinton. His moralistic fervour faltered only when it came to his own conduct: twice divorced, he was once photographed licking whipped cream off the breasts of a particularly buxom woman. He says he was raising money for leukaemia research. (Well, he would, wouldn't he?)

The Libertarian Party is one of the perennial jokes of American politics. Barry Goldwater, a party hero, once argued that “extremism in the defence of liberty is no vice”. Many Libertarians have interpreted that as meaning that extremism in defence of liberty is a positive virtue: one of the liveliest debates in the party is whether all drugs should be legalised, and all federal taxes abolished, next Monday or next Tuesday. The party's best presidential performance was back in 1980 when Edward Clark won 921,128 votes, or 1.1% of the electorate. Most Libertarian candidates have hovered around just 400,000 votes. The party is also badly divided between what might be called its Ruby Ridge wing and its Reefer Madness wing. The Ruby Ridge wing, which has still not recovered from the terrible day when the FBI shot several survivalists at Ruby Ridge in Idaho, believes that freedom comes from the barrel of a gun. The Reefer Madness wing is more interested in keeping the government's hands off its spliffs.

Mr Barr's candidacy is not likely to heal this division. The Georgian has a solid record on guns—he once accidentally discharged an antique pistol at a gun show—but he is much dodgier on other Libertarian shibboleths. He joined the party in 2006 only after being redistricted out of his congressional nest. He once supported both the Patriot Act and the “war on drugs”, though he is now repentant. He won the party's nomination only after six ballots and five hours of voting.

Yet the Republicans would be unwise to write him off as irrelevant: instead, they would do well to consider the reasons for the enduring success of Ron Paul, a Republican who shares many of the Libertarians' views. . .

Mr McCain is not Mr Bush. He has an honourable record as a fiscal conservative (he opposed the prescription-drug benefit, for example). He is Washington's leading campaigner against pork. He is a principled federalist on issues like gay marriage. . .

Mr Barr and the Libertarian Party, as well as Mr Paul, are both imperfect vehicles for all this pent-up anger. But they are vehicles nonetheless...

Third-party Prez nominees on 9/11 skepticism

Libertarian Presidential nominee Bob Barr keeps his distance but doesn't close the door, telling Reason.com May 24:
"Certainly, as a former prosecutor, if anybody brings me legitimate evidence that a crime has been committed, certainly that would be duly investigated by the DOJ. But I'm not interested in conspiracy theories. I'm interested in moving the country forward.
    -----

Green nominee Cynthia McKinney cites her record in the U.S. Congress on her official Facebook page:
"[Cynthia] challenged Pentagon Secretary Rumsfeld and Chairman Myers of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the $2.3 trillion missing Pentagon money and on U.S.-sponsored war games taking place on September 11, 2001...

After the tragedy of September 11th, 2001, Cynthia introduced legislation that would allow the survivors of the tragedy's victims to sue those responsible for the attacks as well as participate in the Victims Compensation Fund.
    -----

Constitution Party nominee Chuck Baldwin talked about unanswered questions (and cited lead 9/11 COINTELPRO agent Steven Jones) during a recent campaign appearance [YouTube]:
"As to 9/11, I don't know the answer to that. I don't know whether there was any kind of an inside apparatus involved in this or not.

    [...]

If I was President of the United States, I would have no reservation whatsoever to appoint or convene an independent investigative committee to analyze the evidence and to find out the truth about 9/11. . .

If there's nothing to hide, there's nothing to fear. . . If there's duplicity involved, and some kind of a conspiracy, then let's find out what it is and let's deal with the people who were involved . And if not, let's put the evidence on the table and satisfy the questions the American people have.
